What is FCSS?

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is a unique 80/20 funding partnership between the Government of Alberta and participating municipalities or Métis Settlements. Provincially, the FCSS Program receives its mandate from the Family and Community Support Services Act and Regulation.

The Regulation sets out the service requirements that a municipality or Métis Settlement must meet to be eligible for funding. Section 2.1(1)(a) of the FCSS Regulation states: “Services under a program must be of a preventive nature that enhances the social well-being of individuals and families through promotion or intervention strategies provided at the earliest opportunity.” Section 2.1(2)(b) states: “Services under a program must do one or more of the following:

help people to develop independence, strengthen coping skills and become more resistant to crisis; help people to develop an awareness of social needs; help people to develop interpersonal and group skills which enhance constructive relationships among people; help people and communities to assume responsibility for decisions and actions which affect them; provide supports that help sustain people as active participants in the community.” At the local level, a municipality or Métis Settlement Council chooses whether to establish an FCSS Program and enters into an agreement with the Government of Alberta to jointly fund projects/services. These projects/services depend on community resources, often involving volunteers in management and delivery.

The FCSS philosophy is based on a belief that self-help contributes to a sense of integrity, self-worth and independence. Programs developed are intended to help individuals in their community to adopt healthy lifestyles, thereby improving the quality of life and building the capacity to prevent and/or deal with crisis situations should they arise.

One of the key principles of the FCSS Program is local responsibility for priority setting and resource allocation. Within the parameters of the FCSS Act and Regulation, each municipality or Métis Settlement determines how the FCSS funding they receive should be allocated to best meet the needs of their community. Local FCSS Programs are part of the larger provincial Program that collectively helps to ensure that Albertans have access to a strong network of prevention supports.

The Children’s Festival is a vibrant, inclusive event where children and families come together to celebrate community, creativity, and fun. Designed to promote learning through play and family bonding, this festival offers a safe, engaging environment for children of all ages to explore, create, and make lasting memories.

The Town of Magrath Easter Egg Hunt is a community event designed to bring families together for a fun, interactive, and festive celebration of the Easter holiday. Children of all ages can enjoy the thrill of searching for hidden eggs, meet the Easter Bunny, and take part in additional seasonal activities that create lasting memories.

Join us for our annual Home Town Christmas Celebration. Sponsored by the Town of Magrath, the evening includes: Santa’s arrival, Christmas tree lighting at Town Hall, late night shopping and prize draws, free skating, crafter’s mall and children’s craft center. Come share the joy of the season with your friends and neighbours. Held the first Monday of December.

Come Celebrate With Us! The annual town celebration is held each year on the 4th weekend of July. Activities include parade, BBQ, softball tournament, fireworks, kid’s races, lawn mower races, concessions, Ag Society activities, outdoor concert and live entertainment. The parade officially starts at 11 am. Fun for all ages!

Magrath Days

Celebrate our freedom by honouring those valiant service men and women who serve our country. Town Remembrance Day programs are held at the Tom Karren Gymnasium and at the Cenotaph at the museum. Let us not forget those who have given their time and their lives that we may enjoy freedom today.

Seniors make a difference in our community every day. From supporting family members and friends to assisting charities and volunteering, seniors are deeply involved in our community and their contributions benefit citizens of all ages. Sponsored by the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Town of Magrath, each year during Senior’s week a special breakfast is held to show our thanks and appreciation to all of the seniors in our community for their contributions in building the great heritage and community we have.
