The Town of Magrath has started construction of a new outdoor multi-court facility as an additional recreational facility to and serve the needs of residents. In consultation with Magrath's Recreation Committee, local school administrators, local minor sports associations, and a survey of Magrath's Jr and Sr High school students for recreational priorities it was determined that a multi-court facility was a high priority for youth and our community recreation.
The project's estimated total cost is $230,000 and the Town's 2021 budget committed $80,000 to the project through Provincial MSI funding. We have applied for grant funding hoping to fund the remainder but we are still waiting for responses on whether our application has been approved. However, two donations from Cardston County for all the gravel needed to base the site and donated time by Jenex to excavate the site the Town Council decided that we should move forward with the project this year. The Town would like to express its gratitude for these donations to our community and is grateful to have received both.
By doing the ground work prior to winter it will help to ensure excellent ground compaction over the freeze/thaw cycle prior to paving next spring. The Town is still very hopeful that our grant funding application will be approved and should know the outcome of that application by that time. If required we will reassess and pivot to other resources as necessary to complete the project.
The Multicourt project is planned to provide several new recreational opportunities for local residents. These Include Basketball courts, 3 pickleball courts, a new tennis court, and a batting cage for baseball and softball.
