Council Statement
May 2, 2023
Last week, we had a great meeting of local area officials and healthcare workers with Dr. Aaron Low and the team from Alberta Health Services on site in Magrath. We toured the Magrath Health Care Facility and covered a list of topics that we have been working on with AHS over the past year. Two of the primary takeaways are as follows.
The group reviewed the Medical First Responder (MFR) agreement now in place. Chief Cliff Blackwell and the Magrath and District Fire Department are now signed on to assist AHS with high-risk emergency medical responses. For high-risk and life-threatening calls should an ambulance be out of reach the AHS dispatch will be able to request assistance from the Fire Department. Also, I’m pleased to be able to inform you that the ambulance service in Magrath has received increased paramedic staffing and is now dispatched again locally for some shifts.
We also talked about the requirements to re-open the medical lab and x-ray departments. Town Council in the past has discussed the possibility, if it would help, to fund some of the training needed for a local technician to be employed and stay in the Magrath facility. This was received with some interest by AHS who will discuss the idea more internally. I certainly hope that we’ll have more details available in the future.
Overall, the theme of looking to revitalize the Community Health Center was very promising. I would be interested in talking to any medical personnel living in Magrath who might be interested in participating in a shared facility to please contact me for more details.
