Welcome to the Town of Magrath, Alberta. Whether you’re new to the community or recently made the move, we’re glad you’re here. Magrath is a small, welcoming town with strong agricultural roots, a proud irrigation history, and a culture of community involvement.

Municipal Utility Services in Magrath

As a resident of Magrath, you will receive monthly utility bills for the services provided by the Town. These services help ensure a safe, clean, and well-maintained community, and include:

• Garbage Collection: Regular curbside pickup of household waste and recycling is provided in accordance with the Town’s collection schedule. Access to the Transfer Station is also available for disposing of larger items and yard waste. Recyclable materials may be taken to the Recycling Centre located at the Recreation Shop.

• Yard Waste Collection: Seasonal collection of yard waste, such as grass clippings, leaves, and branches, to help maintain your property and support responsible disposal.

• Water and Wastewater Services: Treated drinking water is supplied to your home, and wastewater is collected and treated to protect public health and the environment.

• Irrigation Services: The Town of Magrath provides a seasonal(May to September) irrigation water system that supplies untreated water for outdoor use, including lawns, gardens, and landscaping. This service supports residential watering needs and helps conserve treated potable water. Each property is equipped with an irrigation standpipe, please use this system instead of treated town water to save on your water bill. Monthly utility bills will be sent within the first week of any given month and be sue on the 28th of the same month. Residents are responsible for ensuring their accounts are paid on time or risk receiving penalties being applied to the amount owing.

Important Bylaws to keep in mind for your residence.

• Land Use Bylaw
  Governs how properties can be used, including zoning, building rules, and home-based businesses. It ensures new developments are safe and compatible with surrounding properties. To learn more visit the Land Use Bylaw Page

• Unsightly Premises Bylaw
  Sets standards for yard upkeep, removing debris, controlling weeds, and maintaining the appearance of homes and properties. This helps keep the community clean and safe.

• Dog Control Bylaw
  Requires all dogs to be licensed, outlines leash rules, and sets expectations for responsible pet ownership.

• Burning Bylaw & Fireworks Bylaw
  Regulates outdoor fires, fire pits, and the use of fireworks to reduce fire risks and protect residents.

• Noise Bylaw
  Establishes quiet hours and limits on excessive noise to ensure a peaceful community environment.

• Snow Removal Bylaw
  Outlines residents’ responsibilities for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways, and adjacent streets, and sets rules for winter parking.

How Property Taxes Work in Magrath

In Magrath, property taxes are collected by the Town to fund local services and infrastructure. Each year, properties are assessed to determine their market value as of July 1 of the previous year. This assessed value is used to calculate property taxes.

Your property tax bill is made up of several components:

• Municipal tax rate – funds local services such as roads, water and wastewater systems, fire protection, parks, and community programs.

• Education property tax – collected by the municipality on behalf of the Province of Alberta to support public education.

• Other requisitions – may include services such as policing, seniors housing, and solid waste management, depending on the community.

Tax rates can change each year based on the town's budget, overall property assessments, and provincial requisitions. An increase in your tax bill does not always mean your property value has risen; it may reflect changes in tax rates or additional requisitions.

Property owners will receive their tax notice in May and are responsible for paying their taxes by the June 30th. Late payments are subject to penalties as outlined in municipal bylaws.

The Town of Magrath offers the Tax Instalment Pre-payment (TIPP) Program to help property owners manage their municipal property taxes through smaller, regular payments instead of a single annual payment.
